PERSPECTIVE / METHODOLOGY

Seven stages of evidence-based corporate research

A credible report begins long before the final document is written. Clear scope, lawful collection, careful verification and transparent limitations make research useful to decision-makers.

Define the decision

Understand why the research is needed and how the findings may be used. This determines proportionality and the level of scrutiny required.

Design the methodology

Specify research questions, permitted sources, standards for verification, time frame and reporting format.

Collect ethically

Use lawful, legitimate sources and protect confidential information and people involved in the inquiry.

Verify independently

Check major findings against independent evidence where possible and assess inconsistencies.

Analyze carefully

Separate data from inferences; avoid equating absence of evidence with evidence of absence.

Report transparently

Present findings, source qualifications, risk indicators and meaningful gaps clearly.

Support the decision

Explain what the findings do—and do not—establish, and identify appropriate next research questions.

Good decisions begin with evidence, context and appropriate professional judgment.
